Our History
The Story of Ratnagiri
The land on which Ratnagiri stands has remained within the same family for at least five generations. The home was built by Rathinnamma and Navaratnam Sinnathamby and named "Ratnagiri," inspired by the Sanskrit word Giri, meaning "rising from the ground" or "mountain."
Built according to traditional Hindu architectural principles and influenced by colonial design elements, Ratnagiri became more than a family home — it was a gathering place for the community. Navaratnam Sinnathamby served as the Village Council Chairman for many years, and villagers frequently visited the house seeking advice and guidance.
Like many homes in Jaffna, Ratnagiri witnessed decades of social change, migration, and the impact of Sri Lanka's civil conflict. Despite these challenges, the house remained structurally intact and deeply cherished by the family. Years later, the owners undertook a thoughtful restoration project, retaining its historic identity while adapting it for contemporary living.
Architecture
Traditional Courtyard Living
At one time, courtyard houses were a defining feature of Jaffna's residential architecture. Designed to suit the region's hot and arid climate, these homes were centred around an open courtyard, with bedrooms, kitchens, verandas, and storerooms arranged around it.
The high ceilings, shaded verandas, and open central courtyard naturally encouraged airflow, reduced heat, and created a calm and comfortable living environment. The courtyard also served as the heart of the home — a place where family gatherings, celebrations, conversations, and everyday life unfolded.
Today, only a small number of these traditional homes remain. Ratnagiri stands as a rare surviving example of this unique architectural tradition.
