2026-10-13Rising beside the lagoon on the edge of Jaffna town, Jaffna Fort is the city’s most recognisable landmark and one of the finest colonial fortifications in South Asia. The Portuguese began building it in 1618, the Dutch captured it in 1658 and reshaped it into the star-shaped fortress seen today, and the British took control in 1795. The fort was badly damaged during the civil war, and conservation work in recent years has opened its walls to visitors again.
Walk the thick ramparts and angled bastions, pass through the old gateways and corridors, and enjoy wide views over the lagoon and out to sea. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the stone glows and the sea breeze picks up. Bring water and a hat, as shade on the ramparts is limited.
From Ratnagiri Heritage Home Stay in Kondavil, Jaffna Fort is a 16-minute drive, about 6.5 km, which makes it an easy half-day outing. It pairs well with a visit to Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, which is 11 minutes from the house, and you can return to the courtyard at Ratnagiri to rest afterwards.
